Supported by the British Association for Victorian Studies (BAVS) and the University of Roehampton.

Part of the activities of the Romantic Illustration Network<http://romanticillustrationnetwork.wordpress.com/&gt;, this symposium will take a fresh look at the ‘communication-circuit’ between artists, writers and publishers. Some of the themes covered might be: the extent to which illustrations defined a new reading experience; the relations between large and small images; the gendering of the illustration ‘gaze’; colour versus black and white; the role of the illustration in shaping a national canon of both literature and art; the transition from Romantic to Victorian illustration, and from elite metal to popular wood engraving.

Speakers will include:

Lynn Shepherd (Richardson scholar and novelist), Tim Fulford (De Montfort), Sandro Jung (Ghent); Sophie Thomas (Ryerson, Canada); Mary L. Shannon (Roehampton).
